Local Services Ads or Google Ads?

23 October 2026

Local Services Ads charge per lead and require a background check, appearing above everything with a Google guarantee badge. Google Ads charge per click and run anywhere. Availability is limited by country and trade, so check that before comparing anything else.

These two get talked about as if they are versions of the same thing. They sit in the same part of the page and they behave completely differently.

Check availability before anything else

Local Services Ads are not available in every country or for every trade, and the coverage has grown unevenly. Google maintains the current position in its Local Services Ads help.

This is the first thing to establish, because half the advice written about them is from markets where they have been available for years and is useless if they do not run where you are.

How each one works

Local Services Ads. You pass a screening process, which usually includes licence and insurance checks and sometimes a background check. Once approved you appear in a distinct block at the very top, often with a Google Guaranteed or Google Screened badge. You are charged per lead, not per click, and you can dispute leads that were clearly not real.

Google Ads. No vetting. You write the ad, choose the searches, set a budget, and you are charged per click. You decide where people land and what the ad says.

What each is actually good at

Local Services Ads suit you when:

  • You are licensed and insured and can prove both, which is a filter in itself
  • You want the badge, because in a trade where customers cannot judge quality it does real work
  • You would rather pay for enquiries than traffic
  • You do not want to manage an account

Google Ads suit you when:

  • Local Services Ads are not available where you are, which settles it
  • You want control over the message and which page people land on
  • Your work does not fit a neat category, which the lead form will force it into
  • You want to target specific jobs rather than a trade generally
  • You want to switch spend on and off by the week

The application is the hard part

Worth setting expectations, because this is where most businesses stall.

You will need your licence details, proof of insurance at the level Google requires for your trade, and in some markets a background check that is run by a third party and takes its own time. Budget a fortnight before anything goes live, and longer if a document gets queried.

That friction is also the point. It is why the badge means anything, and why the block has fewer businesses in it than the ordinary ads underneath.

The honest trade-offs

Per lead sounds better than per click and is not automatically cheaper. You still pay for leads that were never going to book: wrong area, wrong job, somebody price-checking an insurance claim. You can dispute some of them, and disputing takes time and does not always succeed.

Per click means paying for people who never enquire, which feels worse and is often the better deal once you count what a booked job is worth.

Local Services Ads give you very little control. You cannot write the ad, the enquiry arrives through Google's form, and your profile looks much like everyone else's. That is the cost of the simplicity.

Google Ads can waste money far more creatively, which is why most of the work in running them is stopping that rather than starting it.

Response time matters far more in Local Services Ads. Your ranking inside that block is influenced by whether you answer and how quickly. A business that lets leads sit for a day will slide down it, which is not how ordinary ads behave at all.

Which I would start with

If they are available in your market, you are properly licensed, and you want leads without managing anything: start with Local Services Ads. The badge and the position are hard to buy any other way.

If they are not available, or your work is specialised enough that a category dropdown misrepresents it: Google Ads, set up tightly.

If you have the budget to learn from both, run both. They reach people at slightly different moments and the data from each tells you something about the other.

What neither of them fixes

Both send people to you with the same question: is this business any good. Local Services Ads answer part of that with the badge. Google Ads answer none of it, which is why where the click lands matters so much.

A business with no reviews and a site that gives nobody a reason to ring will struggle with both, and more budget makes that worse rather than better. That is the conversation worth having before either, and it is where the ads work actually starts.

Questions

While we’re here

What is the difference between Local Services Ads and Google Ads?

Local Services Ads vet you first, put you in a block at the very top with a badge, and charge per lead. Google Ads do no vetting, let you write the ad and choose the landing page, and charge per click. They sit in the same part of the page and behave completely differently.

Are Local Services Ads cheaper because you pay per lead?

Not automatically. You still pay for leads that were never going to book: wrong area, wrong job, somebody price checking an insurance claim. Some can be disputed, which takes time and does not always succeed. Per click feels worse and is often the better deal once you count what a booked job is worth.

Which should a trade business start with?

If they are available where you are, you are properly licensed and you want leads without managing anything, start with Local Services Ads. If they are not available, or your work is specialised enough that a category dropdown misrepresents it, Google Ads set up tightly.
