Why Did My Google Business Profile Get Suspended?

4 November 2026

Most suspensions follow an edit: a changed address, a business name with keywords added, a category switch, or a dormant profile suddenly updated. Google does not explain which one. Reinstatement means submitting proof the business is real and operating at the address, then waiting weeks.

A Google Business Profile suspension arrives with no warning and no explanation. One morning the listing is gone from the map, the panel on your brand search has vanished, and the dashboard says suspended with a link to an appeal form that explains nothing.

The timing is the clue, and almost nobody checks it. Look at what was edited in the few days before.

What actually sets it off

Google is trying to catch fake businesses, not punish real ones. The problem is that the signals a fake business gives off are also the signals a real business gives off when the owner finally tidies up the listing.

Four things do most of it.

  1. The address changed. Moving premises, correcting a typo, switching between a full address and a hidden one. Any address edit puts the profile back in front of the verification system.
  2. The business name gained words. "Smith Plumbing" becoming "Smith Plumbing Auckland" or "Smith Plumbing and Drainage Services". The name field has to match the name you actually trade under, on the van and on the invoice.
  3. The primary category changed. Especially a change that moves the business between a category that needs a shopfront and one that does not.
  4. A dormant profile woke up. A listing that nobody touched for three years, suddenly updated with new hours, new photos, a new description and a new phone number in one session, looks exactly like a hijacked listing.

The fifth one is being reported, usually by a competitor who noticed something off about the address.

Which edits are worth the risk

Hours, photos, a description, services, a Q&A answer: safe. Edit them freely.

Name, address, category, and the choice between a shopfront and a service area: these are the identity of the listing, and every change to them is a re-verification in disguise. Make them one at a time, not in a batch, and not on a Friday.

If you genuinely need to change two of them, change one, wait a fortnight, then change the other. It sounds superstitious. It is not: it means that when something does go wrong you know which edit did it, which is the single most useful piece of information in an appeal.

Soft suspension or hard suspension

There are two, and they are very different.

Soft. The listing is still on the map but you have lost control of it. Reviews, photos and hours stay public, you just cannot edit anything. Annoying, not urgent.

Hard. The listing is gone from the map entirely and the reviews are not publicly visible. This is the one that costs money, because a service business that is not in the map pack is not in the three results most people actually look at.

Check which you have before you panic. Search your own business name in a private window. If the panel is there, it is soft.

How reinstatement really works

The appeal form asks for evidence the business is real and operating from the address on the profile. Treat it as a file, not a form.

What helps: photos of signage, a vehicle with the business name on it, a utility bill or rates notice at the address, business registration documents, and a photo of the premises that shows it in context rather than a close crop of a door.

What does not help: a long explanation of how unfair it is, a link to your website as the only evidence, or resubmitting the same thin appeal three times.

Expect two to six weeks. Expect the first one to be rejected if you sent the minimum. Reviews are not deleted, so there is something worth waiting for.

Do not start a new profile

This is the expensive mistake. A suspended profile with ninety reviews and eight years of history is worth far more than a clean new one with zero, and running two profiles for the same business creates a duplicate problem on top of the suspension.

If you have already created the second one, say so in the appeal and ask for it to be removed. Hiding it makes the case worse.

The bit that prevents most of this

Get the identity right once, then leave it alone.

The name is what is on the van. The address is where somebody could actually meet you. The primary category is the one word a customer would use for what you do, not the list of everything you are capable of. Whether you are a service area business or a shopfront is a factual question with one correct answer, and answering it wrongly to look more established is the single most common reason a trade profile gets pulled.

Having run my own trade business, I understand the instinct to make the listing sound bigger than it is. It is also the single thing most likely to get it pulled.

If your profile is suspended and you want someone to work out which edit caused it before you submit an appeal, that is part of what an SEO audit covers. The timeline check is free and you can do it yourself: open the profile's edit history and look at the week before it went.

Questions

While we’re here

Why was my Google Business Profile suspended?

Almost always because something on it was edited. The common triggers are changing the address, adding service keywords to the business name, switching the primary category, or logging in to update a profile that had sat untouched for years. Google will not tell you which trigger fired.

How long does a Google Business Profile reinstatement take?

Usually two to six weeks, sometimes longer, and the first submission is often rejected. Each rejection restarts the clock, so it is worth putting the full evidence in the first time rather than sending the minimum and hoping.

Does a suspension delete my reviews?

No. The reviews sit with the profile and come back when it is reinstated. That is the main reason not to give up on a suspended profile and start a new one, because a new profile starts at zero reviews and zero history.

Can I keep trading while suspended?

Yes, but you disappear from the map results and from the panel that shows on a brand search. Your website still ranks normally. For most trade businesses the map is where the calls come from, so the gap hurts.

Does a suspension affect my website rankings?

No. The profile and the website are separate, so your pages carry on ranking in the ordinary results while the listing is gone from the map. That is small comfort if the map is where your calls come from, but it means the damage is contained rather than total.
